The Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics (CTL), one of five departments in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, shares City University of Hong Kong’s international recognition as the 149th outstanding university in the world (The Times Higher Education Supplement 2007).
The mission of CTL is to provide students with excellent quality higher education; to contribute to the advancement of knowledge; to interact with departments of the same subject areas in other institutions of higher education and professional bodies; to cooperate with industry, commerce and the community; and to offer access to the Department’s human, physical and technological resources for the benefit of society.
Striving for excellence in “appliable” scholarship and teaching, CTL continues to establish links with the community. Our Internship Programme assists students to arrange an institutional sponsor-based industry placement which provides real life working experience with leading organisations in local and/or international contexts for a period of full-time or part-time employment. With placements in public or private sectors, students are expected to gain in-depth and practical understanding of the professional contexts in which they may apply their knowledge and skills related to language.
Full-time credit-bearing programmes
3 credits, 5-6 weeks (June – August)
6 credits, 10-12 weeks (June – August)
Full-time/Part-time non-credit-bearing programme
Maximum length: 12 weeks
Student interns are selected primarily from undergraduate students who are enrolled in programmes offered by CTL:
- Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Chinese
- Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Linguistics and Language Technology
- Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Translation and Interpretation
- Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Language Studies
- Minor in Chinese for Professional Purposes
- Minor in Japanese Studies
- Minor in Korean Studies
The selection priority will be as follows:

Our students are equipped with the following skills:
- Advanced oral and aural language skills in English and/or Chinese (including Putonghua), Japanese, Korean
- Advanced writing and reading language skills in English and/or Chinese, Japanese, Korean
- Ability to perform effectively under pressure
- Critical thinking and problem solving skills
- Familiarity with a wide range of different text types
- Excellent IT skills, including publishing on the internet
- Mediation skills and cultural sensitivity
- Precision and attention to details
- Presentation skills
- Research skills
Before the internship, students are requested to participate in a pre-internship training workshop on business ethics, business etiquette and interpersonal communication skills. The workshop, which is compulsory, is scheduled on 20 May 2008 (Tues).
CTL will provide subsidies to students enrolled in programmes offered by CTL. Students will also be very appreciative of the allowance provided by the internship partner.
Quality is assured because:
- Initial screening done by experienced teachers of CTL
- Pre-internship training provided by CityU
- Performance of the students will be jointly assessed by CityU and the internship partner
The completed form, together with your CityU transcripts and other academic documents that you find useful, should be returned to CTL General Office (B7704) by 3 March 2008, 12:30pm. The schedule of interviews and written tests (if any) will be informed individually to applicants.
Those who apply for placements of HANA must return the completed forms, with other relevant documents, to CTL General Office by 28 February 2008, 12:30pm.
