The Multipurpose Room of the Department serves many different functions. It can be used as a conference room for meeting, a teaching area where students learn, a seminar room for conducting seminars or conferences. The room is richly equipped with modern desktop computers directly connected to the campus network. An advanced class capturing system is also installed, which automatically creates quality podcasts and rich media playback for teaching and research.
Since the department is dedicated to the teaching and learning of Chinese and English, as well as Japanese and Korean, multilingual office application software is available here. In addition, since the department is focused on language technology and computational linguistics, specialized software packages are also available for teaching purposes, such as CALL, corpus linguistics, machine translation, etc.
Many of the above software packages are hosted in the Multipurpose Room's centralized software server, directly accessible from each console. In addition, the department also hosts a number of modern powerful multi-processor servers. At present, two of them are running in Windows 2008 Server and another four in GNU/Linux and Sun Solaris 9 respectively. These powerful machines provide staff and students alike a platform for more advanced work in computational linguistics and computerized content management.
