The Multipurpose Room of the Department serves many different functions. It can be used as a conference room for meeting, a teaching area where students learn, a seminar room for conducing seminars or conferences. The room is equipped with advanced technology such as video conferencing facilities, which provide an interactive learning environment for students and staff to communicate with other sites elsewhere, even in other countries.

Since the department is dedicated to the teaching and learning of Chinese and English, as well as Japanese and Korean, multilingual office application software is available here. In addition, since the department is focused on language technology and computational linguistics, specialized software packages are also available for teaching purposes, such as CALL, corpus linguistics, machine translation, etc.

Many of the above software packages are hosted in the Multipurpose Room's centralized software server and are directly accessible from each console. In addition, the department also hosts a number of modern powerful multi-processor servers. At present, two of them are running in Windows 2000 Server and another three in GNU/Linux and Sun Solaris 9 respectively. These powerful machines provide staff and students alike a platform for more advanced work in computational linguistics and computerized content management.
